For those who believe or hope that we will innovate our way out of the steep energy consumption of future GenAI data centers, here is good news from my alma mater MIT.

A photonic chip invention uses light to run all types of neural network computations at very low energy use rates and with speed and accuracy comparable to existing AI chips. They want to use it to train algorithms to run with better efficiency. Traditional chip manufacturing would seem to enable commercialization relatively soon.

What else is on the horizon to knock down the high energy demands of GenAI?
