Recently I attended the conference “AI and the Environment: Sustaining the Common Good” at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, and it was a fantastic gathering of prominent thinkers on the topic.
I was star struck meeting Dr. Emma Strubell and Dr. Shaolei Ren and getting the chance to share ideas informally with these leaders in sustainable computing research. They are quantifying the environmental impact from the use of electricity, water, and land associated with Generative AI. There was also the first discussion of law and regulation that I’ve heard.
Thank you to the organizers Irina Raicu, Director of Internet Ethics and Don Heider, Executive Director.
