AWS published this white paper that includes their “shared responsibility model” for cloud sustainability. In the model, customers are responsible for optimizing workloads and resource utilization, and minimizing the total resources required.
The hyperscaler cloud companies are working to convince their customers to be highly efficient because demand is outstripping supply.
This is green software design. It’s not a beloved topic in most IT circles. But cloud pricing will rise sharply when the supply of electricity and willing data center construction sites get too scarce. Might as well take their advice now and do the sustainability work.
