Hi Watchers!

The Cloud Sustainability Watch panel on sustainable computing at SF Climate Week went well! The incredible panelists shared insights and the discussions formed a richly informative education on why applications on the cloud must become more sustainable and how it should be done.

They were Allegra Reister of Google Sustainability talking about green cloud and data center strategies, Nolwenn Godard giving insight about green software design, Pascal Joly sharing great info on green devops and also AI, and Ryan Sholin of Electricity Maps talking about green web design and decarbonization.

It was great hearing about Google Cloud’s sustainability strategies and learning more about how Electricity Maps works for anyone trying to shift their workload to low carbon times of day or locations. There was a lot to say about how generative AI makes a transition to sustainable computing more urgent.

The key takeaways were that:

  • Everyone needs to make good decisions about balancing needs and impacts
  • Tech teams and others must start by asking what might be the carbon footprint of their organization’s online computing

The big question: how to get more awareness and adoption. We’ll all be working on it!
